Albany is the county seat of Albany County and the capital of New York. It has close links with Saratoga Springs, Schenectady and Troy, which form a region known as the Capital District. Albany is the 2nd oldest state capital and the 4th oldest city in the United States behind Jamestown, Virginia, St. Augustine, Florida and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Albany has a damp continental weather with snowy, cold winters and warm summers.
The CDTA or Capital District Transportation Authority offers transportation services throughout the state and its surrounding areas, including Troy and Schenectady. Albany is home to significant and large collections of contemporary art. The popular Empire State Plaza Art Collection, belonging to the New York community, includes the works of Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell and Alexander Calder.
There are many recreational areas in Albany, one of which is Washington Park. Washington Park is known as one of the oldest city parks in New York. The Washington Park was organized in 1809. The current location of the park, however, is used as a recreational place for more than 300 years.
Its current layout is designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Lincoln Park was originally called Delaware Square and afterwards Beaver Park. Today there is a swimming pool open to the city's residents throughout the summer months. Another remarkable recreation area here is located along the Corning Preserve. Albany Riverfront Park is an 800-seat amphitheater, hosting several events from spring to autumn. This park has a boat launch and bike paths.
